Singers & Speakers: Match Your Voice With The Experience

Let your tone, pacing, rhythm and volume match your content. If you are telling the audience about being in the desert at night and you want to say "it was so quiet", make your voice almost a whisper on the word "quiet" and slow the pacing down, so you give the sense of the experience.
Singers: The voice is sensitive and delicate, and (like an automobile), needs a maintenance tune-up from time to time. The throat needs moisture, and always needs water. To keep the throat moist this week, trying drinking one glass of pineapple juice per day.

Yelling/Screaming/Hollering Is Not a Form of Proper Singing

When a singer truly feels and experiences what the music is all about, the words will automatically ring out.--Cabelle

For some odd reason or another in this generation and probably past generations I must include, someone or somebody has this perception that if you scream, holler or yell, you are a better singer. WRONG! Belting is different, it's a style of singing that uses an adjustment producing heavy tones through the vocal range. Yelling, Screaming and Hollering, slams the vocal cords together, too often and over time this will result in frequent series of hoarseness and vocal abuse. Over time it will could result in permanent damage which is not irreversible.
For more information on proper and healthier singing check out "Voices Out Of The Box" by author J.P. Olson.

Know Your Voice & Signs Of Vocal Abuse

Know Your Voice & Signs Of Vocal Abuse

Head Register/tone/voice: When your voice produces a light, flute-like tone, conducive to soft and high singing.

Chest Register/tone/voice: When your voice produce a deep, singing from the chest producing a low/pitch singing.

Mixed registration/tone/voice: vocal adjustments having qualities of both light and heavy register. The ability to sing soprano and alto.

Vocal hoarseness occurs for a variety of reasons. Here are two common reasons:
Coughing/Throat clearing - When you cough or clear your throat, you are slamming your vocal cords together very hard. Doing this enough times will create swollen cords and the vocal sound will be different. There is a method for coughing and throat clearing that isn't hard on the cords that is especially effective for people who clear their throats or cough out of habit. You can find these methods in "Voice Out Of The Box" Book in preserving your voice the healthy way.

Grunting (as in weight lifting)-If you lift weights on a regular basis, you may be abusing your vocal cords. Weight-lifters slam their vocal cords together for the resistance needed to lift heavy weights and then grunt at the same time. This activity, repeated over time, may damage the vocal cords because the slamming together of the cords can cause a callous to build up, thus changing the mass of the vocal cords. This may result in a change in pitch and/or create vocal hoarseness.

IT'S A NEW SEASON

Well, it's that time of year; time to spring forward. It's that time of year where we start to see the fruit of our labor as the buds begin to bloom from the seeds that we've sown and soon we'll see the harvest. It's a time of rebirth, renewal and a time for us to recharge our inner beings, our thoughts and our deeds. It's time for us to refocus our energy as we start to shed the old habits, the old thoughts and ways as we begin to blossom into all that God has for us to be. It's a time of rejuvenation and refreshing; and oh yeah..."baseball and apple pie." If you're like me, you started the year with thoughts of a renewed regiment to having a healthier and stronger voice and hopefully, you were successful in carrying out your plan of protecting your voice. Now that spring has sprung, I hope you've prepared your voice to sing melodious songs of praise and shouts of adoration; and for the coaches and fans a few stanzas of "Take Me Out To the Ballgame. So, let's all enjoy this season with a renewing of our mind and take time to stop and appreciate the beauty of the earth that surrounds us.
